GOVERNOR SPECIFIC SAFEGUARDING & CHILD PROTECTION TRAINING

KCSIE 22 states: ‘…ensure that all governors and trustees receive appropriate safeguarding and child protection (including online) training at induction. This training should equip them with the knowledge to provide strategic challenge to test and assure themselves that the safeguarding policies and procedures in place in schools and colleges are effective and support the delivery of a robust whole school approach to safeguarding. Their training should be regularly updated.’

SCHOOLS SAFEGUARDING recognise that this is a new statutory requirement and have devised training that ensures compliancy with this. Although many schools invite governors to access safeguarding training, the training that governors require is very different to that which school staff receive. The training we have designed is therefore specific to the governance of safeguarding and includes the following:

• Governor specific safeguarding responsibilities:

o Policy development, review and scrutiny

o Online Safety

o Prevent Duty and Radicalisation

o Safer Recruitment

o Training and Induction

• Understanding of how policy translates to practice:

o Reality of safeguarding issues in school

o Specific procedures

o DSL role and responsibilities

• Evidencing involvement, understanding and challenge:

o Understanding and responding to Headteacher’s report to governors

o Auditing safeguarding provision

o DSL liaison

o Effective questioning in meetings

This training is designed to be delivered face to face and will include a ‘toolkit’ of resources. Remote training via Zoom can be accommodated. This training can be delivered to an individual school governing board or to a Trust, SIG or cluster of schools.
